Public Access

The revised National Institutes of Health Public Access Policy stipulates that final, peer-reviewed manuscripts reporting research funded in NIH fiscal year 2008 (October 1, 2007–September 30, 2008) and beyond, and accepted for publication on or after April 7, 2008, be submitted to PubMed Central upon acceptance for publication. Furthermore, in NIH applications, proposals, and progress reports submitted as of May 25, 2008 and beyond, the PubMed Central reference number (PMCID) must be included in citations of articles that fall under the revised NIH Public Access Policy and are authored or co-authored by the investigator, or that arose from the investigator’s NIH award.

Manuscripts affected by this policy

  • Manuscripts generated by an NIH FY 2008 (or beyond) grant or cooperative agreement and accepted for publication on or after April 7, 2008.
  • Manuscripts generated by a continuing NIH grant or cooperative agreement that is active in NIH FY 2008 (or beyond) and accepted for publication on or after April 7, 2008.
  • Manuscripts generated by an NIH contract awarded on or after April 7, 2008.
